City, who will be without playmaker Kevin De Bruyne for a number of months with a serious hamstring injury, hogged the ball for long spell but often lacked a creative spark.
En-Nesyri should have doubled his and Sevilla’s tally early in the second half, with City indebted to a couple of fine saves from Ederson as Lucas Ocampos wrought havoc down the left flank.

Man City win 5-4 on penalties
Lineups:
Man City: (4-2-3-1, right ti keft);
31 Ederson (GK) – 2.
Kyle Walker, 25. Manuel Akanji, 24. Josko Gvardiol, 6. Nathan Ake – 8. Mateo Kovacic, 16. Rodri – 80. Cole Palmer (19. Julian Alvarez), 47. Phil Foden, 10. Jack Grealish – 9. Erling Haaland
Sevilla: (4-2-3-1, right to left):
13 Bono (GK) – 16. Jesus Navas (4. Gonzalo Montiel), 22. Loic Bade, 6. Nemanja Gudelj, 19. Marcos Acuna – 8. Joan Jordan, 10. Ivan Rakitic – 5. Lucas Ocampos, 21. Oliver Torres (26. Juanlu), 17. Erik Lamela – 15. Youssef En-Nesyri
England Under-21 winger Cole Palmer nodded in Rodri’s cross to score as he did in the Community Shield against Arsenal 10 days ago.
On that occasion, City came up short from 12 yards but Erling Haaland, Julian Alvarez, Mateo Kovacic, Jack Grealish and Kyle Walker completed a flawless set of spot kicks.
Ocampos, Rafa Mir, Ivan Rakitic and Gonzalo Montiel showed the prowess that saw Sevilla win the Europa League against Roma in a shootout but Nemanja Gudelj, who performed superbly to help shackle Haaland, drove his kick against the crossbar to hand Pep Guardiola the fourth Super Cup triumph of his career.
How will Manchester City replace Kevin De Bruyne
Guardiola boasts a squad of enviable talent, if not the depth in numbers that many assume. De Bruyne’s absence will sting and, after a close season where Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez departed for pastures new, there is a fairly sizeable deficit in terms of goal involvements that will need making up. Haaland can’t just score all the goals, however much he might love the sound of that arrangement.
There was plenty of excitement about Phil Foden slotting into the De Bruyne role but he was largely ineffective until a late switch to the right flank. That was the position where Palmer excelled after half-time but City’s reported interest in the direct and rapid Rennes winger Jeremy Doku made sense as they toiled, too often one-paced and predictable, against a disciplined Sevilla defence.
Bernardo Silva is expected to return from illness against Newcastle at the weekend but Kovacic could prove to be a huge asset for this De Bruyne-less City. The summer signing from Chelsea looks every inch a Guardiola player. His penetrative dribbling in central areas provides a point of difference and he naturally looks for quick through passes to Haaland in moments when his colleagues are more inclined to put their foot on the ball.
How many goals has Cole Palmer scored for Manchester City:
Palmer became a viral hit in January 2022 when he scored against Swindon Town in the FA Cup and proclaimed “Prem soon come” in a post-match interview. The prophecy has not proved accurate. The 21-year-old has still not scored a Premier League goal for City but has the unusual distinction of his six goals for the club being spread across five competitions — the FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Champions League, Community Shield and now the UEFA Super Cup.
Mahrez’s departure creates an obvious opportunity for a skilful winger with an eye for goal, who likes to cut in from the right flank and do damage with a rapier left foot. Brighton and West Ham are among the clubs to have been linked with one of the stars of England’s Euro U21s success. Palmer’s efforts at Wembley and the Karaiskakis Stadium might just have persuaded Guardiola that he is worth keeping around.
One way or another, we should have a definitive conclusion by the transfer deadline. Speaking at his post-match news conference, Guardiola was asked about the prospect of Palmer being sent out on loan: “I don’t think a loan is going to happen,” he said. “He’s going to stay or he’s going to be sold.”
Man City vs Sevilla as it happened, highlights, and commentary
PENALTY SHOOTOUT – MANCHESTER CITY WIN 5-4 ON PENALTIES!!!!
Manchester City 5-4 Sevilla: Nemanja Gudelj, who has been magnificent tonight. Oh, and he’s hit the top of the crossbar!!! Ederson was nowhere near that one either but can tear away in celebration. Manchester City have won the UEFA Super Cup.
Manchester City 5-4 Sevilla: Oooffff, Kyle Walker! Bono guesses correctly and gets a good touch on it but it’s hard and low to the goalkeeper’s right and squirms in.
Manchester City 4-4 Sevilla: Here’s the specialist, Gonzalo Montiel. World Cup final, Europa League final, UEFA Super Cup. Same result!
Manchester City 4-3 Sevilla: Jack Grealish takes his time, lets Bono move and lifts his kick down the middle.
Manchester City 3-3 Sevilla: Some kidology from Ederson but this isn’t Ivan Rakitic’s first rodeo. The City goalkeeper goes the right way but that nestles the side netting.
Manchester City 3-2 Sevilla: Mateo Kovacic. Cool as you like, clipped into the bottom left corner as Bono goes the other way
Manchester City 2-2 Sevilla: Rafa Mir, who I’m not sure touched the ball after his late introduction. Boy does he smack it there though, rifled into the top right corner. Superb penalty.
Manchester City 2-1 Sevilla: Julian Alvarez. Wallop, into the top right corner. Bono guessed incorrectly but it wouldn’t have mattered if he’d gone the right way.
Manchester City 1-1 Sevilla: Ocampos steps up in similarly cool fashion, with Ederson guessing incorrectly.
Manchester City 1-0 Sevilla: City will take the first penalty and have them in front of their supporters. Here’s Erling Haaland. Sends Bono the wrong way and slots into the bottom right corner.

Fulltime: We’ll decide this from 12 yards. Sevilla won the Europa League on penalties against Roma to book their place here. City have won five out of seven shootouts under Pep Guardiola, but have lost the most recent two of those, including the Community Shield against Arsenal 10 days ago.
90th minute+4: Ocampos makes the most of a foul from Walker. Rakitic pumps the ball towards the City area. It breaks to Foden, who wins a foul and we’re heading for penalties.
90th minute+3: Both goalscorers off now, with Rafa Mir coming on for En-Nesyri. It’s a double Sevilla switch, with Suso replacing Lamela.
90th minute+2: Kyle Walker has some shocking shots from distance but that wasn’t bad at all. Bono is off his line and grateful to see it the ball ripple the top of his netting.
90th minute+1: From the corner, Grealish has a shot blocked. There’ll be four additional minutes.
90th minute: Foden over a free-kick on the Sevilla right. In comes Ake!!!! Heads into the turf and Bono touches over.
84th minute: City’s first change at it’s the goalscorer Palmer making way for Alvarez. That will mean Foden coming over onto the right wing.
83rd minute: Montiel, who scored the decisive penalty in both the World Cup and Europa League finals last season, comes on for Navas. He might be useful in a little while…
82nd minute: Now it’s City’s turn to scramble about it their own box as crosses are pumped it. Walker does brilliantly to deny Ocampos on the end of a Navas delivery. Then another teaser is hung up towards En-Nesyri. Ake does enough this time and the Premier League champions survive.
80th minute: What the holy hell is going on in the Sevilla box?!?!?! Kovacic sashays through, doesn’t much fancy shooting, Haaland in crowded out, Walker drives it across the face. Apparently no Manchester City players want to kick it into the goal and Sevilla survive.
79th minute: Palmer whips a devilish cross towards the back post and Navas makes a brilliant clearance with Grealish lurking.
78th minute: Foden almost spins his way through the Sevilla defence. Bade touches it back towards Bono. That probably wasn’t a backpass but he treats it as such. The coolest man in the room is between the posts!
75th minute: Juanlu is on for Oliver Torres. Slightly surprising it’s taken this long for the first substitution.
69th minute: Glorious from Palmer, who sits Acuna down with an outrageous piece of skill. He doesn’t get the shot quite high enough and Bono pushes behind.
67th minute: Kovacic, who’s probably been City’s most effective player, makes a lovely penetrating dribble. Haaland and Foden combine before Gvardiol has a shot deflected behind.
64th minute: En-Nesyri in again and it’s another good save for Ederson. City have enviable, basically unprecedented depth of defensive quality, but without John Stones and Ruben Dias things look incredibly shaky back there.
63rd minute: GOOOOAAAAALLLL!!!!! Cole Palmer!!!!!
An equaliser against the run of play. Rodri floats a cross towards Haaland. It’s too high for him but they’re queueing up at the far post and Palmer nods home.

60th minute: Rinse and repeat. A City attack loses tempo, gets too narrow and Sevilla break. This time down the right and Walker gets a vital touch on a Navas cross to prevent En-Nesyri from making it 2-0.
57th minute: Ocampos, again, in loads of room. What’s going on down that City right? In the end it’s a waste, somewhere between a shot and a cross.
56th minute: Ocampos is all over this game right now and it’s Sevilla’s best spell. Kovacic tears back to help Walker out in his attempts to shackle the Argentina international.
54th minute: Jordan whips in a shot from a free-kick on the left. It’s well hit but Ederson holds it. Probably should have crossed.
52nd minute: Walker gets one back on Ocampos with a fine challenge. City have a rare chance to break but Grealish can’t capitalise. Now another Sevilla chance as Akanji is caught in midfield. Ocampos and En-Nesyri combine again and the strike drives into the side netting under pressure from Ake.
50th minute: Huge save from Ederson. Another ambling City attack run into a red wall of defenders and Sevilla break at pace. Ocampos gets clear of Walker down the left and finds En-Nesyri. The City goalkeeper stands firm to save with his legs. It’s excellent goalkeeping but Sevilla’s main man should do much better.
46th minute: We’re back underway and Walker has given away a free-kick on the City right. A bit of a scramble in the box after Rakitic’s delivery and a half-hearted appeal for handball. On we go.
Halftime: Sevilla were hanging on a bit towards the end of the first half but you’re going to get periods like that against City and they’ve defended stoutly. En-Nesyri’s goal was a classic No. 9 effort too. Catch you back here shortly.
45th minute+2: Grealish curls a lovely ball towards the far post. No one can get a touch, including Palmer who was agonisingly close to converting at the far post.
45th minute+1: Into the first of three additional minutes. Grealish, who is becoming increasingly influential, finds Rodri. The Spain star seemingly forgets it was his goal that got City here in the first place, decides not to shoot and the attack breaks down. City come again and Foden flashes across goal.
44th minute: Ake gets up to meet the free-kick and Akanji has a shot blocked at close quarters.
43rd minute: Grealish skips balletically past Ocampos, who has no time for that sort of stuff and agriculturally brings the England international down. Bizarrely he’s not booked.
41st minute: Grealish chips it towards the far post. Bono punches clear.
40th minute: Jordan clumsily brings down Rodri as he’s going away from goal 25 yards out. No need for that. A silly one.
39th minute: Gvardiol drills a pass into his compatriot Kovacic, who produces a wonderful flick. Grealish is a bit flat-footed, though, and Navas nips in to make the tackle.
38th minute: A couple of City corners come to nought.
37th minute: Akanji, who is doing the darting into midfield thing that the absent John Stones normal does, finds himself all the way up in the Sevilla box on the end of a Palmer pass. Jordan tracks his run and blocks a shot behind into the side netting.
35th minute: Foden cracks his shot into the wall. More specifically, straight into Gudelj’s head. The Sevilla defender is flat on his back and will need a bit of attention.
33rd minute: Rodri slides a pass through for Haaland, who has got goal side of Bade. The Sevilla defender takes down City’s No. 9 and takes a yellow. That was probably the best outcome possible having got himself into that position. Foden is over the free-kick.
30th minute: Chance for Lamela to make it two but the ex-Tottenham winger makes a hash of it. Mendilibar aghast on the touchline.
25th minute: GOOOOAAAAALLLL!!!!! Youssef En-Nesyri!!!!
A magnificent centre-forward’s finish gives Sevilla the lead. Bono scuffs a clearance that actually ends up being a find pass through the lines to Torres. Acuna gets up to support the attack and swings in an excellent cross from the left. En-Nesyri gets up above Ake and powers home.
22nd minute: Kovacic gets the ball booted into his face and we’re having a break for the players to take on some fluid. Feel free to do the same.
17th minute: Grealish hops inside Navas and fizzes a shot from the edge of the box. It’s a nice height for Bono, who pushes behind. His defence deal with the right-wing corner.
16th minute: The pace has already slowed. It’s very hot. Kovacic seeks to quicken a ponderous City spell with a throughball to Haaland. Navas reads it but Haaland will be encouraged by how quickly his new teammate is looking for him.
10th minute: That’s not such a good piece of goalkeeping. Walker lofts a hopeful ball into the Sevilla box and Bono punches tamely when he should catch it. Handily for him, it falls to Gvardiol. The left-sided defender won’t have scored many goals on his right foot, fewer still on the volley from 30 yards. A hopefully hack flies high and wide.
8th minute: Excellent save from Bono! City work the corner short and Palmer swings in a cross to the back post where Ake has escaped the attentions of the Sevilla defence. He heads into the turf and the Morocco international does well to repel the bouncing ball.
7th minute: Palmer cuts inside for a signature shot on his left foot. He goes low and Bono reads it to hold. City launch another attack and Kovacic slips in a reverse pass to Haaland. A clumsy first touch allows Bade to clear behind for a corner.
6th minute: Navas whips in a dangerous cross from the right. Ocampos aims a bicycle kick that only serves to confuse matters. Ederson eventually gathers after another rocky moment for the Premier League champions.
5th minute: Gvardiol takes his time before hurling a throw-in towards the Sevilla box. Foden’s touch doesn’t find Haaland.
4th minute: Sevilla on top during these opening exchanges. Kovacic is the latest City player to cough up the ball in a dangerous area. Guardiola’s men yet to get into their rhythm.
2nd minute: Sloppy play from Akanji and Torres robs possession deep inside the City half. Lamela can’t quite shake Rodri’s attentions and he scuffs a shot wide from outside the area.
1st minute: City get us underway. Gvardiol is at left-back, with Ake inside him alongside Akanji in central defence. Palmer wins a free-kick off Lamela.
1 min to kickoff: We will observe a moment’s silence in memory of the Greek football fan who died last week following violent clashes between fans of AEK Athens and Dinamo Zagreb.
2 mins to kickoff: Walker and Navas all smiles as they exchange pendants before before kickoff. We’re nearly ready to go.
4 mins to kickoff: The teams are in the tunnel. They’re about to walk out into some sweltering heat in the arena. It’s seriously warm in Piraeus.
15 mins to kickoff: Pep Guardiola asked in his pre-match interview with TNT Sports who needs to step up in Kevin De Bruyne’s absence.
Thanks for that, Pep.
20 mins to kickoff: Mahrez left City to move to Al Ahli and, if reports are to be believed, Sevilla goalkeeper Bono is poised to join him in the Saudi Pro League. This could be a farewell appearance for the Morocco goalkeeper who is set to become one of Neymar’s new teammates at Al Hilal. Can he sign off with some silverware?
40 mins to kickoff: When these two sides met in the group stages of the Champion League it was pretty much one-way traffic. City won 4-0 at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, with Erling Haaland scoring twice. In a dead rubber at the Etihad Stadium, Rafa Mir gave the visitors the lead before second-half goals from Rico Lewis, Julian Alvarez and the now-departed Riyad Mahrez secured a 3-1 triumph for Guardiola’s men.
1 hour to kickoff: Here’s how Sevilla lineup. Former City winger Jesus Navas, nowadays a veteran right-back, starts as captain. Navas is something of a Sevilla institution and played when the Andalucian club beat Barcelona back in the 2006 Super Cup.
1 hr 45 mins to kickoff: Here’s the City team. Josko Gvardiol gets a full debut with fellow defenders John Stones and Ruben Dias sidelined. Bernardo Silva is unavailable due to illness, meaning a start for Cole Palmer on the right wing.
1 hr 30 mins to kickoff: Confirmed team news will be with us shortly but one thing we know for certain is that City will be without their talismanic playmaker Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgium international suffered a severe recurrence of the hamstring injury that forced him off during the Champions League final when City beat Burnley last week. Guardiola expects to be without De Bruyne for around three to four months.
Julian Alvarez has started City’s past two games in an attacking midfield position but De Bruyne’s extended period on the sidelines is sure to increase clamour for Phil Foden to be given a central role. The England youngster came on in the Champions League final and impressed as a central attacking midfielder and it will be interesting to see whether Guardiola includes Foden there or on the wing tonight.

1 hr 45 mins to kickoff: There are bigger priorities for Pep Guardiola this season but going back to his time in charge of Barcelona and Bayern Munich, the Manchester City boss has always revelled in these occasions. If City are victorious tonight, he will be the first coach to lift the Super Cup with three different clubs.

2 hours to kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of the UEFA Super Cup. Champions League winners Manchester City are in this showpiece for the first time, while seven-time Europa League victors Sevilla are comparative veterans, although they have lost on each of their previous five appearances.
Man City vs Sevilla lineups
Captain Kevin De Bruyne is out, after suffering a hamstring injury against Burnley, with the Belgian star set to be sidelined for several months. Defensive duo Ruben Dias and John Stones are also absent due to concussion and a groin issue respectively.
That means a full debut for £77.5 million signing Josko Gvardiol, while Bernardo Silva’s absence through illness opens the door for Cole Palmer to start after his goalscoring turn from the bench in the Community Shield.
Man City lineup (4-2-3-1): 31. Ederson (GK) – 2. Kyle Walker, 25. Manuel Akanji, 24. Josko Gvardiol, 6. Nathan Ake – 8. Mateo Kovacic, 16. Rodri – 80. Cole Palmer, 47. Phil Foden, 10. Jack Grealish – 9. Erling Haaland
Sevilla captain Jesus Navas starts at right-back, although fellow former City player Fernando is out due to illness. Jose Luis Mendilibar has selected Lucas Ocampos, Oliver Torres and Erik Lamela in support of Youssef En-Nesyri. Papu Gomez and Rafa Mir will have to wait to make their impacts from the bench.
Sevilla lineup (4-2-3-1): 13. Bono (GK) – 16. Jesus Navas, 22. Loic Bade, 6. Nemanja Gudelj, 19. Marcos Acuna – 8. Joan Jordan, 10. Ivan Rakitic – 5. Lucas Ocampos, 21. Oliver Torres, 17. Erik Lamela – 15. Youssef En-Nesyri
